7 Million Users Jailbreak Using Evasi0n

You may have heard that last week saw the release of the first untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini. Now that users have had time to install it, we’re able to bring some rather startling statistics about the number of users that have installed the update.

These figures come via Jay Freeman, an elder statesman of iOS hacking and the administrator of the popular Cydia repository of jailbreak-only apps. Speaking to Forbes, Freeman was able to confirm that the jailbreak has been applied to 7 million devices in its first four days of release.

That count includes some 5.15 million iPhones, mostly iPhone 5 models which are able to be jailbroken for the first time; 1.35 million in the case of the iPad and again mostly the freshly able iPad Mini; and finally 0.4 million using the iPod Touch.

The jailbreak is available for any device that can run iOS 6 or 6.1. Since version 1.3, the evasi0n jailbreak is also compatible with iPhone 4S models that are running the iOS 6.1.1 update, which corrected some issues that iPhone 4S owners were having sending text messages and connecting to the internet.

The totals are apparently much improved over past jailbreaks. According to Freeman, evasi0n has brought “insanely more traffic” to Cydia, although he didn’t have specific numbers. One reason for the rapid uptake may be the amount of time before the jailbreak was released, a full 136 days since iOS 6 was first made available. It took just 98 days for the iOS 5 jailbreak Absinthe to be available, so users may have been hungrier for this one. Of course, the number of iOS users is also increasing rapidly with the release of each device, so it’s no surprise that a jailbreak gets a substantial increase each time.

What do you think of the record traffic? And have you already jailbroken, or do you plan to do so? Please do let us know in the comments below! Thanks for reading and have a good one!
